1.  Yes, because Babilonia outlined all of the criteria and points out that her criteria is all correct.

2.  Babilonia changes to an academic like authority, which gives her more credibility.  These references provide a stronger 'ethos' than her own opinions would.

3.  "Celebrity Chef" has two differnect aspects, you need to establish both.  She couldn't take the word "celebrity" for granted.

Toys for Saps

1.
 He
criticizes it because the selling of toys shouldn’t be based on just business
success, but the well-being of the children should be more important.  It is stated most directly in the same
paragraph, where it explains the child’s psych needs.
I believe his argument
does a very good job on discussing why toy companies should focus on the
children more, but a business is a
business.

2.
He states it a couple
times that he understands the profit to the business is a good thing, but I
think he focuses too much on the opposite side of the spectrum.
He needs to show he
understands the profit because that is the main purpose of a business; to make
profit.

3.
The intended audience
would be the parents.
This would be because
the parent’s would show more concern towards a child’s mental state rather than
how much they would want a toy.

4.
I believe Cross targets
the rational faculties and the emotions of the audience pretty evenly. There are points where he makes obvious facts as to why we should or
should not buy the toys, as well as when he starts to talk about “our children”
(makes it more personable).

5.
He is establishing
credibility by saying that he has also given in to the toys for his
children. I don’t believe he establishes it as effectively as he could though,
because he uses pretty general words, such as “junk”.

6.
I believe so because it
adds the emotional feeling towards the children, because no one wants their
child to be hurt because of a toy.
I think it is effective
because it will play on the audience’s emotions, which is always a good way to
persuade.

7.
The major change in
marketing and design in this essay would be when the toy business’s changed
their focus to movie/TV show characters.
The effect of this change was that the companies made about double of the
usual profit by doing this.
This help’s Cross’
argument because it shows the companies were more focused on
profit.

Don’t Blame Wal-Mart

1.
His audience at this
moment is people who shop online.
His purpose is to make
the piece more personable to everyone who shops online, because usually the
biggest factor in purchases is the
price.

2.
I think he does a
pretty good job, because he uses his general knowledge and his own personal
experiences to help persuade his
audience.

3.
He proposes a couple of
ideas that would help our jobs/communities while not affecting prices by that
much.  I think it is better to do this than to directly choose one side,
because I believe both sides have pros that could incorporate within each
other.

4.
I think it is a very
good example because most American use Wal-Mart, but at the same time, many
people understand some of the ‘necessary evils’ Wal-Mart also participates
in.

In my first ad, it is a picture of a football star yelling about how good old spice is.  The audience this ad appeals to would be to men who like sports and want to be as manly as the football player using old spice.  I am going to change the demographic to appeal to woman.  In order to make this change, I'm going to make the football player shirtless in the shower to create a sexy appeal to all women in the world.  He would also be wearing a speedo.  http://running.about.com/b/2011/07/27/how-do-you-feel-about-shirtless-runners.htm - Source

1.  He is comparing both of their childhoods in Aftica.  They both had family pets and gathering, fieldtrips in school, and had time to play outside as well.

2.  If he had continued to use this method, he would have never been able to tell the audience as to why his comparisons/contrasts were important.  Also, it would have been very difficult to wrap everything up as well as he did.

3.  I liked the way Sedaris compared his main points to Hugh's childhood, but the ending was very unexpected to me.

4.  Some of the narrative elements in this writing would be:  the movie, the life with another family, not celebrating Hugh's birthday, the grandmother that had Alzheimer's, and Uncle Paul.  Without these, the story would not have any life to it.

1.  What Kelso is trying to do is compare/contrast the stereotype and the reality of being a ballerina.  I believe that this strategy works very well in this setting.

2.  Some of the remote causes in this story are:  being told by the teachers not to eat, losing valuable opportunities in the future, and the normal peer pressure.

3.  I believe the main issue about ballerinas in this story is the abusive and unhealthy treatment directed towards them.  This is because I believe that the emotional/physical abuse caused by the treatment will have a very long lasting and very harsh effect on these young women, which could hurt them in the future.

4.  Kelso uses:  weight statistics, quotes from Balanchine, Baryshinikov, and dance critics, the four paradoxes, as well as statistics about osteoporosis.

5.  I believe Kelso's purpose was to show the reader what really happens on the inside to ballerinas around the world.  Because of Kelso's explanation, this writing coul

Take some notes. How does your chosen ad use… Mint Z ad.

Color?  This ad uses the color to enhance it by looking like a pencil, yet it has totems on it.

Line?  This ad is just a pencil carving, so it is shaped in a line like a pencil.

Shape?  It is shaped like a normal pencil, yet it has carvings on it, so it is unique.

Scale/Size?  It is zoomed in on the pencil so one can see the unique carvings

Space?  This ad has a lot of empty space so the audience can focus in on the chewed pencil.

Texture?  The pencil looks very rough edged, and amateur, but this will draw attention to the audience.

Value?  It has a very dull color on the outside, but it has neutral colors on the pencil.

Afterwards, look over the data you’ve collected about your image and write your answers to the following questions:

1)      Why did this ad’s creators make the choices they did?

Because it interest the audience to want to chew the mint z gum because of its ability to “increase chewing ability”.

2)      How do their choices help sell the product?

It peaks interest to the audience because it gives an exaggerated ability.

"Slender Man- Mythical Creatures Guide"

1.  This story is intended for college students.  You can tell because you it references to roomates and other things in college life.

2.  The purpose would be to study or to completing projects at the last minute.  The author did not need to say the purpose any clearer because it was obvious as to who would need the advice.

3.  The instructions  are just bits of advice; they don't really need a sequence.  The individual directives describe them more complex though, and have a sequence of smaller steps.

4.  This reading is not an essay because it is missing a beginning and an end.  It is more of a list.

5.  It adds humor because it has the person doing many things at once.

6.  I think the study partner example is very funny and adds to the story very effectively.
