Reflection Essay
At the start of the semester, I was not ready for my English 103 class. Personally I have never liked English classes and I figured this was going to be like all my other English classes I took in high school. Thankfully, I was wrong. English 103 was really a good time. My classmates were great, my teacher was awesome, and I actually took a lot of skills that are going to be applied in my life, such as the resume and cover letter paper. In this essay, I am going to reflect on certain aspects. These aspects will be: audience, genre, evidence, analysis, process, product, and my overall experience in the course.
First, I will talk about the audience aspect. I believe that out of all of my papers, I was able to show the most understanding for my audience in the narrative. The reason I believe that my narrative was my strongest in regards of the audience is because in my narrative my audience is my eight year old granddaughter. In my paper, I reference my granddaughter multiple times in regards of her not wanting to go to school. I believe this is my strongest audience paper because I believe it is a lot easier to relate to a young child in a paper as opposed to a group of adults. This is because talking or writing to children is simple. You do not have to make anything technical or specific, you just have to give the story how it is.
Next, I will talk about the different types of genres we have done in class. The four different types of genres, or papers, we did were the narrative, the process, the ad comparison, and the resume and cover letter. I think that I had the most understanding of genre for the resume and cover letter project. This is because I have already had a few jobs as a teenager and have received a lot of feedback on my resumes. Even though I have never written a cover letter, I still learned a lot about a cover letter to now include them with my resumes. Another reason why I think my resume was my greatest understanding of genre is because my entire resume looks pretty professional and has a good deal of information for someone as young as I am.
Another aspect I will talk about is about my use of evidence in my projects. My ad analysis essay would have to be my strongest example of evidence out of all of my projects. This would be because I had to do a lot of gathering of information in order to completely understand my ad and how to change it. In my paper, I include research that describes the demographic of the original ad, as well as how to change it to appeal to another demographic. A major reason as to why I chose this certain evidence is because it was good information on why and how my ad appealed to the audience of football loving people.
My ad analysis paper also had me use my best analytical skills. This would be because I had to analyze the current ad and how it affected a certain demographic and then research on how to completely change that ad to appeal to a different demographic. In order to explain the ad and how it was viewed, I was able to gather evidence as well as incorporate my own thoughts on analyzing the ad in order to explain what the purpose of the ad was. After gathering more evidence, I was then able to completely change the ad and analyze that one to explain how it was changed and how it will make a difference.
The next aspect I will talk about will be my writing process. I think that my best writing process would have to be in my process essay. This would be my best writing process because it was much easier to go through and write out step by step how to avoid my monster as opposed to having to write out drafts of paragraphs. It was also a lot less stressful to put most of my paper into steps rather than write out paragraphs that had to flow well together with well thought of transitional sentences. Most of my process paper was just written by numerical steps which made it much easier to read and much easier to write.
The last aspect I will focus on will be what my best work was. In all honesty, my resume and cover letter would have to be my best work. This would be because, as stated previously, I have had a lot more experience in that type of writing. I have also had a lot of feedback from not only teachers, but from many employers as well. My resume itself looks professional and is organized, unlike some of my essay writings. I also believe it is my best work because I am not very good at creative writing and a resume is mostly facts and does not require much research since it is about me.
Overall, I believe I have become a better writer. This English 103 course has taught me much about the professional view on my papers because my teacher was very fair in grading and also very honest in what needs to be better. Having such a great teacher and being able to improve my writing through this course affected me the most throughout this course and I am very glad I was able to take a lot from the course. In the future, I hope to improve on my grammar skills as well as how to flow sentences and paragraphs better in my papers.
In conclusion, I have learned much from this course. Looking back on what I have done in this semester, I am very glad I took the course and I am also glad I was luckily paired up with an amazing teacher. Mrs. Sills taught the class like she was supposed to, but also added a very fun factor in the class as well. It was a fast semester, but definitely well worth it.
