1. He is comparing both of their childhoods in Aftica. They both had family pets and gathering, fieldtrips in school, and had time to play outside as well.
2. If he had continued to use this method, he would have never been able to tell the audience as to why his comparisons/contrasts were important. Also, it would have been very difficult to wrap everything up as well as he did.
3. I liked the way Sedaris compared his main points to Hugh's childhood, but the ending was very unexpected to me.
4. Some of the narrative elements in this writing would be: the movie, the life with another family, not celebrating Hugh's birthday, the grandmother that had Alzheimer's, and Uncle Paul. Without these, the story would not have any life to it.
